"Anything so innocent and built like that just got to be named Lucille" ~ Dragline
I bought the DVD of "Cool Hand Luke" the other day. It is one of my all time favorite movies and has a wealth of really great lines. The following clip contains what I consider the best line of the movie:

I dunno, Mark.
I think the best line of the movie 'Cool Hand Luke' had to be Strother Martin's: 'what we've got here is a failure to communicate.'
Certainly, the best VIDEO of the movie is the car wash scene.
But not the best line, although the 'Lucille' line was delivered by George Kennedy with feeling. Who'da thunk method acting was present way back in 1967?
That "failure to communicate" line is the most popular line, to be sure, but ranks way down on my list of favorite lines from "Cool Hand Luke."
I also like, "Wish you'd stop being so good to me, Captain", "Like a ripe watermelon about to bust", "She knows what she's doin' alright, drivin' us crazy and lovin' every minute of it", and "I'm shakin' it here Boss".
"That's my darling Luke. He grins like a baby but bites like a gator."
Wait, isn't that the Carl's Jr commercial? :-)
Let me just say, as a woman, I loved that film and didn't remember that scene!! Not surprising YOU DO, Mark!!
I've never seen the movie.
I might go rent it now...for all the good quotes, of course.
Joe, you might be surprised. I must have watched this movie about 4-5 times before I realized it has very little cursing.
For a movie about a chain gang, it's surprising it doesn't contain much offensive language. The clip presented here is the most obscene part. And it's uncensored.
If you don't count the scenes of brutality, and even those aren't too offensive. This movie proves Hollywood can make great movies without resorting to the basest obscenity.
This is a very famous scene, revered by movie goers everywhere...
