A Hiccup

"I could never think well of a man's intellectual or moral character, if he was habitually unfaithful to his appointments." ~ Nathaniel Emmons

Years ago, I found myself in the position of owing the IRS about $3,000 dollars. After filling out my income tax form one year, I realized I was going to have to pay the IRS almost a thousand dollars, and I didn't have it. So, I simply didn't file my taxes.

The same thing happened the next year. And the next. After three years the IRS sent me a bill for the back taxes and the penalties, including interest owed, and I eventually paid it in full.

Now. I knew I was delinquent. I knew I was wrong. I knew I would have to pay someday. There was absolutely no misunderstanding about what I was doing.

It was not an accident. It was not, as Harry Reid would say, a "hiccup". It was a willful decision on my part to avoid paying taxes.

If an ordinary citizen (and an admitted economic moron) knows not paying taxes is illegal, how could anyone believe a man who should be somewhat of an expert on money matters, could "accidentally" fail to pay his taxes?

Al Capone spent the rest of his life in Prison for the same thing Tim Geithner did.

How could we trust a man like that to be the Secretary of the Treasury?

Is it any wonder a party that would nominate, promote and celebrate the election of a Socialist as President would overlook the obvious flaws in his choice of a tax cheat for Treasury Secretary?

Actually, he's a typical Democrat. He thinks taxes should be paid by everyone.

Everyone but him.

UPDATE:

I was listening to NPR radio today, and the newsbabe was already offering excuses for Mr. Geithner. She said it wasn't surprising that Mr Geithner was confused as it's easy to be confused with all the changes in the tax laws.

She actually suggested Geithner was simply confused!

I would think Mr Geithner, being the chairman of New York's Federal Reserve, would be able to successfuly navigate the tax laws, even if he doesn't have an accountant doing them for him.

Gotta hand it to the Dems. They are so efficient they are having scandals before Obama even takes office.

But where is the media tagline a la "culture of corruption?"

My husband made an honest mistake on our taxes one year. We short paid by $98. We actually thought we had paid our full tax burden.

Two years later they came after us for penalties and interest. It took a few months to straighten it out. We paid a little over $700 to the IRS for an HONEST mistake of $98.

A year later another agent came to us. This agent tried to collect another $700. He said that even though it was a joint return and my husband had paid what was due and signed the paperwork, I hadn't signed it. Therefore I still owed the bill and needed to pay another $700. I kid you not! I was pregnant and under Dr. orders to avoid stress. I told him he had to deal with my husband and why. Yet he continued to call the house and harrass ME until I threatened to file charges against him.

It took multiple phone calls by my husband and finally another trip to the federal courthouse to straighten this one out.

THEN when we sold our house TWO YEARS LATER, turns out that a THIRD agent filed a personal lien against me for back taxes in the amount that we had already PAID from an HONEST mistake.

I got hold of a supervisor from the IRS. Wonderful woman! She said this was verging on harassment (ya THINK?!). She faxed a statement to my husband stating that the lien was filed in error. Then she removed it from my credit report.

In all, we paid about SEVEN TIMES what we failed to pay them through a mistake and spent countless hours over four years clearing it up.

Now if we had to go through all of that BS for a true $98 "hiccup," WTH should Geithner get to be Secretary of Treasure after not paying $34,000?!

Tell you what. If he pays 7x's that in penalties and interest, $238,000, I'll let it go.

Well, Obama has appointed Tim Geithner, and all of the garbage that was in the Bill Clinton administration to his cabinet (including Hillary) so what can we expect?

I am so sick and tired of hearing pundits and MSM air-heads refer to the members of Congress as the "Honorable" so-and-so, to our Presidents as esteemed, what a crock! Our government is run and filled with out-and-out liars, truth twisters, cheats, lechers, whore-mongers, pedophiles, sexual-perverts, thieves, adulterers, con-men and women, swindlers, alcoholics and every other sort of flotsam and jetsam from the dregs of society.

Do you see a bright future for America? I don't.

I almost forgot about this guy, as I posted on two other dubiuos choices at American Descent. But hey, what are we doing worrying about character and judgement?

And yet America is the greatest country in the world, right?

My position is, give the democrats a break. They're working with the best they have.

At first glance, I thought it odd that Obama idolizes Abe Lincoln -- a Republican. But then I realized, there have been no truly great democrat presidents. You just have to make allowances for them.

I would think it odd that he idolizes Abraham Lincoln, but then I realize Obama probably doesn't even know much about the man other than the Emancipation proclamation.

It's easy to idolize someone one knows little about.

Mark,
Well said!

Who's kidding whom? Geithner wasn't unaware of the tax laws nor did he make a mistake. He was delinquent with his taxes. Right there, he should be ineligible for the office to which BHO has nominated him.

Hey, and thanks for stopping by my site. I worked hard on my essay "Inauguration Madness" and am pleased with how it turned out. As a composition teacher, I'm often telling my students, "Find your voice." I found mine on the topic of "The One's" coronation.

What a laugh! Why? The republican party of today bears no resemblance whatsoever to the one of Lincoln.

It's an odd and inane comparison.

Jim, to answer your question: I'd say not for long.
