I Think

"I think, therefore, I am" ~ René Descartes

Imagine my surprise when I discovered I have been awarded a "Thinking blogger" award, from not one, but two of my fellow bloggers!
The Thinking Blogger Award

Ken, from "The Conservative Truth/ The Liberal Lie" , left the message for me in the comments section of my last post, as did Mary, from "Freedom Eden".

Actually, I'm not completely sure if I got the award because I make people think or because I think, myself. I will define it in my own way, thank you, and assume it means I think.

Who'da thunk?

The reason this comes as such a surprise to me is because there are some bloggers that apparently believe that I don't think at all.

I won't mention any names, but one in particular comes to mind who's initials are E.R. He repeatedly accuses me of getting all my blog entry ideas from Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham, etc. I assume this means he doesn't believe I have the capacity to think for myself. He often infers that I listen too much to Conservative talk radio.

Nothing could be further from the truth. While I enjoy listening to Conservative talk radio, unfortunately I rarely do anymore, due to the fact that I only listen to radio when I'm driving, and the old pick-up truck I've been driving doesn't have one.

Interesting enough, I recently responded to one of his typical accusations over at ELAshley's place, in which I charged that he is less likely to do any original thinking than I. I referred to the fact that his posts usually are copied and pasted from some overtly Liberal website somewhere, with very little actual commentary from him. I rarely do that.

ELAshley, by the way, is one of my choices for my bestowal of the thinking blogger award.

So, while I'm on that subject, I am expected to list The Official Participation Rules. They are as follows:

1. If, and only if, you get tagged, write a post with links to 5 blogs that make you think

2. Link to this post so that people can easily find the exact origin of the meme

3. Optional: Proudly display the 'Thinking Blogger Award' with a link to the post that you wrote.

Here are my official choices for Thinking Blogger Award recipients:

1. Lone Ranger

2. Serial Extremist

3. The Flesh is Grass

4. Chicago Con

5. Trucker Philosophy

I would have liked to add Marshall Art to the list, but as far as I know, he doesn't have a blog. Yet.

Just to prove that I do indeed think, here is a thought upon which I often reflect, and it involves the quote I placed at the beginning of this post:

If, in the course of a discussion, Descartes were to state, "I think not", would he then cease to exist?

Ooh! I'll leave that for Jason to ponder. It's right up his alley.

Thanks for the kind words. It turns out I DO still have a blog, but there's nothing on it. Someday I'll actually gather my thoughts or something will inspire me. At that point, I'll direct you thither.

As for yourself, congrats on the recognition. You deserve it. Yours is a regular stop on my blog surfing excursions. Your thoughts are sound, your comments respectful, the conversation's lively, and the chairs are comfy. Add dancing girls and a wet bar and you'd pack 'em in. Keep up the good work.

I would have sent you one as well, Mark, but I thought you could only get one from one person.....I knew Mary sent ya one.

Definitely deserving......Keep up the good work, my friend.

I agree with the dancing girls by the way:)

Yes Pero, That's why I didn't send you one. You already have been named.

Like you, I am routinely accused of being simplistic and a mental lightweight. But, repeating an analogy I used earlier his evening, the ones who accuse me of such seem far more simplistic than I-- Dan and others have no trouble looking upon a slice of moldy bread and immediately thinking... "Huh! That slice 'o bread has been sittin' out way too long!" and of course they're right. But they never bother to dig deep enough to understand why the bread attracted the mold in the first place.... That's what I'm about.

Thanks for the nomination. Just so you know, you get my vote too, even though I'll won't tag you again.

As for the name change... I figured if you could do it so could I. BenT thinks I'm a nazi, and Dan and ER are probably not too far behind. Even the Lone Ranger noted that my profile-pic makes me look like a serial killer.

Curious... I changed my name just 2 days before Virginia Tech.

Thanks for the recognition.

Isn't "I think therefore I am" a logically invalid argument, since the premise depends on the conclusion, rather than vice versa?

Mark said...

By George, I think you might just be correct on that one there, Liam!

Are you guys giving awards to yourselves? Again?

Anonymous said...

Liam - it's called reductionary logic. The fictional Sherlock Holmes was famous for it. But it aint the only form of logic.

BTW - where's my award for best troll on rightwing blogs?

WTH? The only thing ER has been repeatedly doing regarding yourself, Mark, is ignoring your blog and not thinking about you at all, good or ill. Present moment excepted per yer invitation just now at EL's place.

Erudite Redneck said...

Just saw EL's remark! What *is* it with y'all takin' my name in vain! Harrumph.

EL, I wouldn't dare speak for Dan, but if I thought you were a Nazi, I'da tole you so by now, and if I didn't think you were a thinker, I'd ignore you like I have taken to doing with Mark. Present moment excepted ... invitation ... etc., etc.

Erudite Redneck said...

Oh, Mudkitty, what you gaet around this joint is more seductionary "logic" than reductionary.

Seductionary logic is a righty-right -- hey, Pero! -- speciality!

Succubus-like, it is, in that somebody always gets screwed.

:-P

You're right, ER. I apologize. You think.

You think anyone you don't agree with is absolutely wrong, and anyone who agrees with you is absolutely right. No matter how much evidence there is to the contrary. And you think you have exclusive right to insult people while you may do it as often as you like.

Mark said...

By the way, Mudkitty. Sherlock Holmes used "deductive reasoning". You are so fond of telling people to look it up. Look it up.

Mark said...

Mudkitty, Edgar Allen Poe's fictional detective, Auguste Dupin, sed a similar process which he called "ratio summation".

Mark said...

I think. It may be spelled differently, but that is how I remember it.

Erudite Redneck said...

Oh, this is funny:

"You think anyone you don't agree with is absolutely wrong, and anyone who agrees with you is absolutely right. No matter how much evidence there is to the contrary."

You can't even get it right when yer talking about being right!

I don't think you're wrong because of everything you think. I think yer wrong because you have a murderous heart and you worship, if that is the right word, a caricature of the Lord, a cartoon, which is supersition, not faith. You silly goose!

Mark said...

I worship the Lord of the Bible. If you consider that a caricature of the Lord, I guess you have clssified yourself.

Marshal Art said...

ER,

What's up with this:

"I think yer wrong because you have a murderous heart and you worship, if that is the right word, a caricature of the Lord, a cartoon, which is supersition, not faith."

Murderous heart? Worship a caricature? What do you have that explains these comments? Are you like those sad sacks that discount a Christian for not being Christ himself? Is that it? How do you figure yourself to be a closer representation? That beam in your eye may be affecting more than your vision.

No, because you having a thought entails your existence.

BTW, I'm honored by the award, Mark.

I think, therefore I am, I think...

Thanks for the nod, my friend...

I will address it when I get time.

It means a lot to me when we give Awards to ourselves... again...
